The people of Gatineau say an overall increase in crime is plaguing the city on the shores of the Ottawa River.
Here is what is bothering people in Gatineau the most in data collected over the past three years:
Overall increase in crime
According to 88 per cent of respondents, an increasing overall crime rate in the past three years is the biggest problem Gatineau faces.
Theft from vehicles
Thefts from vehicles is a major problem for 63 per cent of respondents. The installation of a car alarm would help reduce the number of thefts from vehicles.
Corruption and bribery
While not nearly as on the same scale as corruption and bribery in Montreal that doesn’t mean people aren’t concerned about in Gatineau. 50 per cent of respondents feel corruption is a big problem. In 2014, the City of Gatineau called in Quebec’s anti-corruption squad to investigated afters bids on a new municipal arena came $15 million more than the estimated cost.
Using and selling drugs
44 per cent of respondents are concerned with drug use and the selling of drugs in Gatineau.
Property crimes
Property crimes like theft and vandalism are a big problem, according to 31 per cent of respondents. Installing a home alarm system would help deter break-ins.
On the good news side, 94 per cent of respondents feel safe walking alone during daylight hours, while 69 per cent feel safe walking alone at night.
